Thermal Energy Storage Tank at Domain to Help Offset Peak Energy Demand

Austin Energy contractors began installing this week the concrete panels that form the sides of the four-story tall thermal energy storage tank at the Domain Energy Center in North Austin. The 2.4 million-gallon thermal storage tank will allow Austin Energy to chill water to 42 degrees overnight then turn the chillers off during summer days, offsetting 4.3 megawatts of energy use during peak demand periods.

We provide chilled water for air conditioning to 14 customers at the Domain totaling 4.1 million square feet of retail/residential space, but we have been unable to store the chilled water and offset peak demand without a tank, until this project.
