From 2007 through September 2013, Austin Energy has offset 365 MW, leaving 435 MW to achieve over the next seven years.

Our strategy to achieve the 800 MW goal includes an accelerated target mix of green building, energy efficiency and demand response products and services such as the smart thermostat program. These strategies also include services to capitalize on the growth of the electric vehicle market and other emerging technologies.

Our first conservation power plant was completed by offsetting 700 MW between 1982 and 2006.

Heavy rain deluged the I-35 corridor through Central Texas
overnight into Thursday morning, with southeast Austin particularly
hard-hit as Onion Creek and Boggy Creek rose swiftly, flooding property,
damaging roads and causing outages to thousands of Austin Energy customers.

At
peak, about 8,500 customers were without power. As rainwater runoff flowed
across the Onion Creek Substation on Fallwell Lane and adjacent property, the
substation was under several feet of water for several hours, as Onion Creek rose
to its highest recorded level. In addition to trapping staff at Sand Hill
Energy Center for several hours, the floodwater damaged fences, washed out
parts of the roadway and downed trees. As water receded Thursday, crews were
able to access flooded areas and restore power to circuits that were brought
down during the flooding. The substation remained offline Friday as Austin
Energy crews worked to clean up and assess the damage.

work to energize this week the first phase of the new Dunlap substation
in far eastern Travis County. The substation will serve both
transmission and distribution needs and includes the largest autotransformer ever for Austin Energy at 672 megawatts, 30-feet-tall and weighing almost 890,000 pounds.

Austin Fire Department and its partners, Austin Energy and Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) environmental staff will provide oversight and support for the exercise, which will be conducted in conjunction with the PARD’s Prescribed Burn Plan for the site. The celebration highlighted the summer solstice (June 21), the longest

ability to capture light directly from the sun and from light reflected
upward from the ground. At night, the tree displays a halo of LED

been delivered to Austin Energy in the first phase of a lease contract that

The leased vehicles include a dozen bucket trucks with a 35-foot reach,
typically used by repair crews working on overhead lines, as well as taller
buckets, including a 100-foot lift needed to reach the highest levels.
Typically, we have bought equipment outright and used it as long as it was
operable. However, as equipment ages, reliability diminishes – a significant
concern when working to restore power, often in stormy weather.

The five-year lease approach comes with service and repair contracts that ensure
quick turnaround or vehicle replacement should problems develop. In the next
fiscal year, the second and third phase of the contract will see more than
two-dozen additional bucket trucks and other field vehicles delivered. Austin

The power will move through the animal to the pole in what is called a phase-to-ground power surge, and a power outage occurs.

Squirrels cause more than 300 power outages each year in the Austin Energy system in spite of significant efforts to protect equipment with special animal guards. These guards are used by utilities all across the country.

Unfortunately, there is no absolute way to protect all electrical equipment from animal contact. Squirrels are a primary cause of non-storm related power outages in just about every part of the country with significant tree canopy.
Almost 34,000 of the 70,000 streetlights

when streetlights turn on and off to better match seasonal sunrise and
sunset changes. And, it provides economy of response when maintenance is
needed, because all streetlights in an area with issues can be
addressed in one repair trip.

In addition to the
communications nodes, crews are installing fixtures that shine the light
down rather than out and up. That work is part of the City of Austin
Dark Sky initiative. Both the installation of the communications system
and the Dark Sky retrofits are projected for completion by the end of
this year.

The communications system is projected to save
almost $400,000 a year in reduced streetlight energy use. Significant
savings will also be achieved through economy of scale maintenance
response. These streetlight initiatives began in the spring of 2011.

The substation is being built in phases over the next two years to serve growth and help relieve transmission congestion on the statewide grid. The substation will serve both transmission and distribution needs and will include the largest autotransformer ever for Austin Energy at 672 megawatts (MW), 30 feet tall and weighing almost 500 tons. An autotransformer steps-down high voltage coming in from power plants. By contrast, the second largest autotransformer in the Austin Energy system is 480 MW.

The substation also will include a 30 MW transformer to support distribution of power to Austin neighborhoods.
Energy customers first purchase any of the qualifying Wi-Fi-capable

Then, once a qualifying thermostat has been installed, sign up for the

thermostat company’s website.

In return for the $85 rebate,
customers agree to allow Austin Energy (via the Internet) to raise
thermostat settings a few degrees typically between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on
about 15 days over the summer when energy use in Texas is high. These
load reduction events never occur on weekends or holidays.

Thermostats
that qualify customers for the Austin Energy program are: Nest Learning
Thermostat (available at Lowe’s and Treehouse stores), EnergyHub
Filtrete 3M Radio-Thermostat (available at Home Depot), ecobee Smart and
Smart Si Thermostats (available through heating and air conditioning
companies) and Radio Thermostats CT30 and CT80 (available online at
Amazon.com). Images of the thermostats are below.

Load Reduction Reduces Electric Bills

Reducing
electricity demand during peak demand periods in Texas saves all Austin
Energy customers on their electric bills. It limits the need for Austin
Energy to buy additional power during the hottest summer afternoon when
market power prices can be 50 times higher than normal. The 1,000
customers already signed up for the program represent potential energy
savings of up to a megawatt of power. A megawatt of power for an hour
this summer in Texas could cost as much as $100,000 at peak market
prices. Purchased power costs are recovered on the electric bill of
every electric customer.

Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostats Help You Save

WI-FI-capable
thermostats can help customers reduce air conditioning and heating
costs. Some of the qualifying thermostats have motion and light sensors,
which allow them to automatically raise temperature settings slightly
when the home is empty and lights are out.

Residential customers with questions about the new Power Partner Thermostat program: Call 512-482-5346 or email powerpartnerthermostats@austinenergy.com.
